Oxfordshire copywriting company WORD-right, has announced the launch of a series of Copywriting Masterclasses.

The first in the new series is ‘Professional Copywriting Techniques’ which will be held on Thursday 26th May.  The second: Website Copywriting, will be held on Tuesday 28th June.  The half-day classes will all be held at Bloxham Mill Business Centre, near Banbury, from 9.15am until 12.30pm.

WORD-right held a pilot Press Release Writing Masterclass in early April.  The class was fully booked and ten people attended.  The positive feedback has prompted the development of additional copywriting Masterclasses.

The Masterclasses take a hands-on approach, with students having the opportunity to put their buslearning into practice.  The classes are designed to help small business owners and marketing professionals improve their business writing skills.

The Copywriting Techniques Masterclass will cover such subjects as accessibility, writing styles, and what to write.  The Website Copywriting Masterclass will illustrate why writing for the web is different, and students will each write a web page for their own company.  Each attendee will receive a comprehensive take-home notes pack covering the content of the class.

While each Masterclass can be booked separately, prospective students wishing to attend the Website Copywriting Masterclass are being encouraged to also attend the Copywriting Techniques session.  This will ensure they have the appropriate writing skills needed to make the most of the website writing class.

Joy McCarthy, WORD-right’s principal copywriter comments, “We asked the students who attended the Press Release Writing Masterclass what other subjects they would like covered.  Their input has resulted in the creation of the new series of Masterclasses.  The popularity of the subjects meant several of the places were booked within hours of their launch.”

The cost of each Masterclass is £40 + VAT.  Places can be booked online at http://www.word-right.co.uk/copywriting-masterclass.html.  Anyone booking the Copywriting Techniques and the Website Writing Masterclasses together will receive a £10 discount, paying £70 for the two instead of £80.

At our PR Writing Masterclass in April, we held a ‘draw’, with one of the students winning a free press release review.  The lucky winner was Rosie Burchell of Brethertons Solicitors in Banbury.

Rosie’s press release was so good, it barely needed reviewing.  You can see the results below …

Black day for Banburyshire businesses

Brethertons solicitors, in association with Lloyds Bank, hosted the special Banbury Business Breakfast Club “Olympic Breakfast” on Thursday 31st March with Olympic silver-medal winning athlete Roger Black as the guest speaker. The event was held at Rye Hill Golf Club in Milcombe as part of Brethertons celebration of the countdown to the London Olympics.

Tom Lawrence, Brian Auld, Roger Black, David Hodge, Mike Dibben

Around 150 people attended the breakfast, where Roger Black’s speech focused on his own Olympic experiences and concluded with a screening of a video showing his gold-medal winning relay race at the 1991 World Championships. His talk featured anecdotes from his sporting career and inspirational words on overcoming personal set-backs, as well as an insight into his early athletic career. He then handed round his two silver medals, won during the 1996 games in Atlanta in the 400m and 4x400m relay, while he took questions from the room.

Mike Dibben reveals that there was another reason to celebrate Roger’s appearance “This is a timely occurrence as it has just been announced that Roger will form part of the British Olympic 2012 Ambassadors team and we are very pleased to offer him our congratulations”. Guests were treated to a full English breakfast and a chance to have their picture taken with Roger.  Roger stayed for autographs and one-to-one chats with the guests, before the event came to a close at 10:30am.

Brethertons is a successful local Law Firm employing 160 people across its 2 offices in Banbury and Rugby. The breakfast club was established by Shaun Jardine, Litigation Partner at the firm, around 19 years ago in response to a lack of suitable networking opportunities in the town. The breakfast club has approximately 1500 members and meets on the first Thursday of every month. It features a different guest speaker every month. Previous speakers include Michael Heseltine and Tony Baldry.

Rye Hill Golf club hosts Golf days and corporate events on a regular basis. It has an 18-hole Golf course and a comfortable club house.

Lloyds Bank is one of the official sponsors of the 2012 Olympic Games, and applications for tickets are now being taken through the Olympic website (http://www.london2012.com/visiting/tickets/)

Fiona Durnin - winner of the Cutting Edge's princess bride contest

Winning bride Fiona Durnin with the Cutting Edge directors

The winner of the Cutting Edge Hair and Beauty Salon’s Bridal Princess competition was announced at the ‘Fantasy Fairytale’ evening at The Gallery – Rye Hill Golf Club on Thursday 31st March 2011.  The winning bride was Fiona Durnin of Banbury, who is marrying her fiancée Neil on August 6th 2011.

Fiona has won a hair and beauty wedding package: free hair and beauty trial prior to her wedding.  And on her wedding day in August, she will have her make-up created and hair styled by the salon’s bridal specialists.

The event was held to celebrate the forthcoming Royal Wedding.  A percentage of the ticket sales and the raffle proceeds have been donated to Tiago’s fund.  Four-year old Tiago Dos Santos from Banbury has cerebral palsy.  The fund has been set up to raise funds for his treatment.  Over £300 was raised on the night and The Cutting Edge has committed to raise a total of £750 for Tiago’s cause.

The Fantasy Fairytale evening started with the announcement of the three finalists in the bridal competition.  They were chosen from the ten brides who entered.  The two runners-up were Samantha Cross and Karen Corbett, both from Banbury.  All three finalists modelled for the Cutting Edge’s wedding hair styling demonstration.  Three of the salon’s stylists worked with the brides, giving them a hair make-over during the evening.

As well as watching the hair demonstrations, the audience had the opportunity to look round the displays and talk to wedding suppliers who had co-sponsored the event.  Close-up magician Richard Young from Oxford entertained and astounded everyone with his dazzling repertoire of magic tricks.   Balloon and bridal flower specialist The Balloon Lady,  decorated the venue, and Bucks Fizz and canapes were provided by Rye Hill Golf  Club.  Wedding cupcakes were proved by Cakes for All.

The evening’s finale started with a bridal fashion compered by Chipping Norton business man and presenter, Ken Norman.  The wedding gowns were provided by Banbury’s Katherine Allen and the men’s wear by Henrys of Banbury.

The winning bride was announced at the end of the evening.  All three finalists were presented with a bottle of champagne by Kirsty Pearce, salon director of The Cutting Edge.  The winner, Fiona Durnin, was presented with a bouquet of flowers.  All three finalists also won a studio photo sitting and free portrait with local wedding photographer, Fiona Baker.

Kirsty Pearce from the Cutting Edge said, “All our salon staff were involved in choosing the winning bride. We had asked all the brides to tell us why they wanted to win the competition and this was used for the judging.  Fiona Durnin’s reasons were so compelling, several members of our team were moved to tears.  We would like to thank everyone who took part: the brides, all the guests on the night, and of course all our sponsors.”

Yesterday saw our very first copywriting masterclass held at Bloxham Mill near Banbury.  We had a full house of 10 people from a range of businesses.  Although we expected everyone to be local, one of our delegates travelled from Hertfordshire to attend the masterclass!

PR Masterclass training in Oxfordshire

Wearing PR hats!

The ice was quickly broken when everyone was tasked with making themselves a PR hat … from a sheet of newspaper.  They didn’t know origami was also on the agenda!  Later in the morning, Ray Avery the general manager of Bloxham Mill, popped in to judge the results.

After covering some PR theory, everyone got down to work writing their own press release.  Their enthusiasm was inspirational … as were the results.  At the end of the session, each delegate was given a comprehensive take-home pack of notes to back-up their hands-on learning.

The feedback was very positive, with many of the students demanding more copywriting sessions!  Here’s what some of them had to say:

“Word-right’s PR Masterclass was really enjoyable and very informative. A relaxed way of learning.  I would definitely recommend this class. Joy has a great deal of knowledge which I would love to tap into further.”

“An excellent, concise course with a comprehensive take-home pack. Would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone who wants to write eye-catching press releases.”

“I never thought I would be able to write press releases, but now I have the tools and confidence to do so.”

Future copywriting masterclasses will be announced shortly.  For more information, visit the WORD-right website or call Joy McCarthy on 01608 642845.

Avium Grounds Maintenance Swindon Logo

Avium Grounds Maintenance Swindon

Luke Whiteside of grounds maintenance company Avium, based in Swindon, says local companies are recognising the importance of good first impressions.  As confidence in the economy grows, more business parks, hotels and large companies are now planning their year’s grounds maintenance to ensure their external presentation is faultless.

During difficult economic times, managing extensive grounds often takes a back seat while resources are spent on what are perceived as more essential activities.  Grounds maintenance often adds to the in-house staff’s workload, who don’t have the time, skills or the equipment to do the work thoroughly.  As a result, the business grounds can look neglected, which has a detrimental effect on the company’s image.

Avium Grounds Maintenance reports an increase in forward planning already in 2011, with Swindon companies keen to create good first impressions for visitors, customers and staff alike.   The early snow in November and December caused damage not only to grounds in the region, but also to structures such as cycle sheds and smoking shelters.  Avium’s team have been kept busy doing essential repairs as well as ensuring customers have enough salt and grit supplies to cope with any severe weather conditions.

As well as providing grounds maintenance services to some of Swindon’s most prestigious companies, Avium is also an approved contractor for the Environment Agency.  Much of this work carried out involves the treatment of Japanese knotweed on river banks, where extreme caution is needed to avoid any contamination of water courses.

Luke Whiteside of Avium Grounds Maintenance said, “Keeping large grounds looking good needs ongoing work. During the winter months, there is still work to be done to keep grounds in tip-top condition.  Frosts can dislodge recently planted trees and shrubs, so it’s essential to make sure they are bedded in properly.  And it’s important to do any pruning before the end of February before the bird nesting season starts.”

Avium gives seasonal horticultural hints on its website to help companies keep on top of their grounds maintenance.

Anyone interested in a grounds maintenance service can contact Avium on 01793 729999, or by email to enquiries@avium-gm.co.uk.

Banbury hairdressers, The Cutting Edge (http://www.the-cuttingedge.co.uk) has proved itself to be at the cutting edge of hair design.  Based in Rotary Way, The Cutting Edge is the only salon in the Banbury area using and stocking the revolutionary new heating rollers from Cloud Nine: TheO.

TheO, which was launched in the US in June this year, is the brainchild of Robert Powls, the international hairdressing icon.  Using NASA technology, TheO has brought heated rollers into the 21st Century.  Because of the unique design of the rollers, TheO is considerably easier to use than traditional heated rollers.  It uses seven times less electricity, and is cool to the touch, eliminating the risk of burns and accidents.

TheO heated rollers create hairstyles with volume and movement.  They are easy to use, making them ideal for home use, as well as in salon.  The lightweight soft grip rollers gently hold the hair without the need for pins or clips.

TheO Stockists Cutting Edge in Banbury

TheO heated roller pod

TheO system consists of a heating ‘pod’ and soft grip technology rollers, which are available in a range of sizes.  The rollers are placed in the pod, one at a time and, at the touch of a button, the pod weighs the roller to determine the heating time.  TheO’s unique heat induction technology heats each roller to 130° in less than 4 seconds.  By heating the rollers individually, the heat is delivered on demand, unlike traditional rollers which rely on heating the entire set.

TheO rollers are heated from the inside and, like the pod, feel cool to the touch.  Traditional heated rollers are very hot, which makes them difficult to handle and has the potential to burn the scalp.

For long-lasting hold and added shine, TheO Amplifying Spray is recommended for use with the rollers. The Amplifying Spray makes styling easier and its weightless, firm-hold formula prepares the hair for styling and ensures it wraps smoothly round the rollers.

The Cutting Edge salon director, Kirsty Pearce comments, “TheO is the perfect hair product.  It’s easy to use and gives fantastic results every time.  We’re very privileged to be the only salon in Banbury to be stocking them and they are fast becoming this season’s ‘must have’ hair product.  TheO is going to be on a lot of Christmas wish lists!  We use them in the salon all the time, and I never thought I’d be championing the use of heated rollers!  We’ve only had them in stock for a few weeks and we’ve already sold quite a few.”

TheO Pod retails at £149.95.  The rollers come in packs of four, in a range of sizes from 20mm to jumbo 60mm, and are priced between £15.95 and £18.95 a pack.  TheO Amplifying Spray costs £12.95.  All the products are available from The Cutting Edge Hair and Beauty Salon and orders are being taken now for Christmas.

Anyone wishing to try TheO, can make an appointment with The Cutting Edge Hair and Beauty Salon, Rotary Way, Banbury, by phoning 01295 278910.
